Wallace - Original Artwork

Wallace is an original pastel painting featuring a beautiful Highland Cow.

Having lived in Scotland for six years, encountering Highland Cattle was a fairly regular occurrence. On almost every dog walk, these nosey beasties would wander over to the fence to see who was there and whether or not there might be a chance of a scratch. Created from a selection of my own reference photographs, Wallace captures that familiar curiosity and gorgeous character that makes Highland Cattle so wonderfully endearing.

About the artwork

I wanted Wallace to capture more than simply the distinctive appearance of a Highland Cow. There is something superbly characterful about them, from their voluminous coats and sweeping horns to their eyes expressively peeping out through the mass of unruly hair.

Working in soft pastel allows me to build up the texture of the hair and bring out the variations of colour within it, whilst retaining a softness to it. I always feel like they would be so soft to touch and that's something I wanted to try to portray.

At a framed size of 74 x 94 cm, Wallace is a substantial original artwork with a strong presence on the wall. The piece has been professionally framed in a stunning satin black stepped frame with a generous museum mount, giving the piece a contemporary finish.

As an original artwork, Wallace is completely unique. Every mark has been created by hand, making the physical piece quite different from a reproduction or print.

The story behind Wallace

My years living in Scotland gave me plenty of opportunities to encounter Highland Cattle in their natural surroundings with the weather often blowing a hoolie around them. They became a familiar part of everyday life, particularly on walks with the dogs or whilst riding my horse, where their curiosity often brought them over to investigate much to the horror of the horses!

Wallace is a little nod to those encounters and to my affection for the Scottish landscape and the animals that are so much a part of it.
